A Study on the Impact of Rapid Urbanization on Environment – a Case Study of Macao

Abstract

Currently, urbanization is a fundamental byproduct of socio-economic progression and industrialization. As the global economy flourishes, urbanization emerges as a universal occurrence. Specifically, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area exhibits an urbanization rate of 85 percent, indicative of its rapid and high-level development within China. Therefore, enhancing the quality of urban growth is pivotal for future progress. With this perspective, this study examines the Macao Special Administrative Region, the city with the world's highest population density, to investigate the effects of its rapid urbanization on both its natural and cultural environments. The goal is to offer insights applicable to other high-density global cities. Our findings suggest that while Macao's swift development in recent years has generated substantial economic revenue and elevated urban management levels, it has also incurred considerable social costs. These include exacerbated environmental challenges and constraints on the city's sustainable development. Future strategies for mitigating urbanization's impact should include optimizing disaster prevention measures, safeguarding the coastal marine environment, establishing a green travel system, promoting urban greening, and implementing standardized waste classification measures.
