Abstract

Mia Couto published the novel O último voo do flamingo (The Last Flight of the Flamingo)in 2000. In 2010, João Ribeiro released a film adaptation under the same title. Although they employ different artistic languages, both authors present a decolonized perspective on Mozambique. This article examines the connections between the film and the novel, intertwining fiction and history. Particular emphasis will be placed on the forms of intertextuality through representations of space and time within both artistic frameworks to highlight the challenging process of Mozambique's decolonization. Postcolonial representations will be analyzed through the lens of interdiscursivity, the departure from the Western canon via magical realism, and the sense of otherness. The conclusion suggests that João Ribeiro's feature film adapts Mia Couto's text by offering a cinematic perspective on Mozambique's history while retaining the visual poetics of the traditional world present in Mia Couto's work. Through representations of space and time, both artistic expressions serve as a counter-discourse to European culture, emphasizing otherness and contributing to constructing a Mozambican identity.
