Abstract
The teaching of foreign languages, beyond linguistic competencies, encompasses the formation of citizens who can act as intercultural mediators in the context of the global and digital society (Byram, 2008; Jazbec, 2023; Kramsch & Zhu, 2016; UNESCO, 2023). Considering the pressing importance of the intercultural dimension in foreign language teaching, this research focuses on intercultural issues in the context of teaching and learning Portuguese as a foreign language through the analysis of the curriculum plans of Portuguese degree programs in higher education institutions in Macau (China). The main questions of this study are related to the intercultural content addressed in the Portuguese courses taught by universities in Macau, among other aspects such as the number of credits, objectives, and resources used within these curriculum units. Through a documentary analysis of the curriculum plans of Portuguese degree programs in five universities in Macau, the main results reveal that, in general, the intention to promote intercultural teaching seems to be present in the curriculum plans. Therefore, it is important to promote a dialogue on this topic to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between theoretical assumptions and the practical implementation of intercultural contents.
