Abstract
Literature is the privileged field for the study of human relations. There, not infrequently, connections of strength between genders, races, cultures are exposed, sometimes giving voice, sometimes silencing those who live on the social margins. Mia Couto is an author who writes from and about the periphery, centralizing it. His characters from the margins become center, through the rewriting of History. His trilogy As areias do imperador [The emperor's sands] fits in here. The aim of this text is to focus on the "ex-centric subject" (Hutcheon 1991) of the narrator-character of Mulheres de cinza [Women in gray], the first novel of this triad, assessing narrative strategies to invert the Center-Periphery relationship.
