RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ONLINE AND OFFLINE ATTENDANCE AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Abstract

This paper empirically investigated the relationship between students’ online and offline attendance and their academic performance. A data sample of students’ online and offline lecture attendance rates and their academic performance was collected from the author’s university in the academic year 2022/2023 in Chinese-culture-oriented Macao, covering four senior undergraduate courses of disciplines ranging from software engineering to management. Students’ academic performance in a course was assessed by their final examination scores or their coursework scores in the course, depending on whether the course concerned included any final examination. It was found that students’ both online and offline attendance rates were positively associated with their academic performance, and students’ both online and offline attendance rates predicted or, more specifically, improved their academic performance after controlling for the effect of each other. These findings offer guidance to universities, educators and students on the importance of lecture attendance.
