N2 - The primary aim of this paper is to provide a comparison of the Portuguese-speaking African realities, particularly focusing on Angola and Mozambique. Despite these contexts having distinct linguistic dynamics, literature in these regions continues to emphasize the importance of the Portuguese language. This language, which has evolved into a unique entity through its interaction mainly with the Bantu-African oral tradition, not only serves as a tool for social mobility but also as means of international communication. As Portuguese transcends its European roots, it infuses the literature of these nations with an aesthetic and linguistic vitality that sets it apart from its European counterpart, granting it a sense of autonomy and identity. The primary objective of this reflection is to chart the linguistic landscape and showcase, through concrete literary examples, the interplay between the Portuguese language and the literature that utilizes it as their means of expression. To accomplish this, a brief historical and linguistic overview will be offered, spanning from the pre-independence period to the present day in Angola and Mozambique. Throughout this examination, we will explore how the Portuguese language, as it takes on new forms in these African settings, provides a unique vehicle for literary expression. It is within this linguistic evolution that we find the core of African identity and autonomy in literature. By showcasing the distinctive character of literature in Angola and Mozambique, we hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of the influence of language on culture, identity, and the ever-evolving global literary landscape.
