The Experience of Virtual Reality in Gerontological Nursing Education among Nursing Students

As the global aging, gerontological nursing course is important in nursing education. The aim of this study was to explore nursing students' experiences and perceptions of using virtual reality (VR) in a gerontological nursing course. Three stages of implementation were planned and applied including preparation, application, and evaluation. A qualitative descriptive design was used to analyse nursing students' reflection reports after aged simulation and VR activities. This research was held at nursing lab in Macao. Of 85 nursing students completed VR simulation with reflection reports. Nursing students' experiences were analyzed and summarized including the feeling of being an older adult, safety concern, empathy, prospective aspect, and immersive experience. This study concluded that the use of VR technology in GN with traditional teaching methods can enhance nursing students' knowledge and empathy towards older people.
